How to Read a Skincare Label (Without a Chemistry Degree)
The beauty industry is full of marketing jargon designed to confuse you. Terms like "natural," "organic," or "pure" are often unregulated and used loosely. At Archwood, we want to empower you to look past the front of the package and understand the ingredients list.
Here are the basics:
-
Prioritize the Top 5: Ingredients are listed in order of concentration. The first five ingredients make up the bulk of the product. If water is listed first, that’s fine, but look for beneficial actives in the next few spots. Avoid products where the top five are mostly cheap fillers or synthetic binders.
-
Identify the Preservatives: Look for names ending in '-paraben' or other synthetic preservatives. We use trusted, Eco-cert preservatives to ensure safety. Check for INCI (International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients) names. If you see a long, complicated chemical name near the bottom, research it.
-
The "Fragrance" Loophole: The word "Fragrance" or "Parfum" often hides dozens of undisclosed chemicals, including phthalates. If a brand uses this term instead of listing the natural essential oils (like Lavandula Angustifolia Oil), be wary. Transparency is key.
We list every single ingredient on our label, and we refuse to hide behind marketing "BS." Our commitment is full ingredient traceability, meaning you know exactly what is, and isn't, touching your skin.
